Summer is coming to Hostel Centre Esplai, and we’re looking forward to being able to visit the beaches around Barcelona! What better way to enjoy this time of year than with a nice, worry-free swim? In this article we would like to show you which Barcelona beaches are accessible for those with reduced mobility, and also tell you about the services they offer.

See what the Barcelona City Council has to say about accessibility:

Accessibility is an integral element in the design and configuration of any public space within the city.

That’s why over the last few years, efforts have been made to make Barcelona’s beaches accessible to all users and customers. Accessible beaches facilitate access and allow the population, especially those with limited mobility, to enjoy everything that the beaches have to offer. So let’s do an overview of the beaches that you can enjoy worry-free, and look more specifically at what they have to offer.

  • Playa de la Barceloneta

This beach is located in the district of La Barceloneta, between Playa de San Miquel and Playa de Somorrostro. This is one of the most famous beaches in Barcelona since it offers a large number of services, including many that are aimed towards those with reduced mobility or who use a wheelchair. The services offered are as follows:

      • Reserved parking.
      • Handicapped access route to the sand.
      • Handicapped access route to the water.
      • Wooden boardwalks for visitors.
      • Accessible showers, change rooms and bathrooms.
      • Accessible lockers.
      • Lifting crane, two amphibian wheelchairs, life jackets, floating devices and parasols.

There is always a technical manager and volunteer support staff available to help you with your activities.

  • Playa de la Nueva Icária

Playa del la Nueva Icária is located in the Poblenou district between Barcelona’s Olympic Port and Playa de Bogatell. This beach has the second highest number of services for guests with reduced mobility. Let’s take a look at the services they offer:

      • Reserved parking spaces along the coastline boardwalk.
      • Handicapped access route to the sand.
      • Handicapped access route to the water.
      • Wooden boardwalks for visitors.
      • Accessible showers, change rooms and bathrooms.
      • Lifting crane, two amphibian wheelchairs, life jackets, floating devices and parasols.
      • A pergola that acts as a sun shade in the rest area of the beach.

There is always a technical manager and volunteer support staff available to help you with your activities.

  • Playa del Fórum

Here we find ourselves at Playa del Fórum, located next to Port Fórum in Sant Adrià del Besòs. So far the beaches we’ve looked at have had very similar water access systems. In this case we find completely different equipment, but the services are very similar to those above:

      • Reserved parking spaces.
      • Handicapped access route to the sand.
      • Handicapped access route to the water.
      • Free hammock service for more comfort.
      • Accessible showers, change rooms and bathrooms.
      • Shaded area.
      • Hydraulic crane for water access.

There is always a technical manager and volunteer support staff available to help you with your activities.

There are also other beaches such as Playa de Sant Sebastià, Playa de Somorrostro, Playa de Bogatell and Playa de Marbella which offer basic services for those with reduced mobility: reserved parking areas, access routes to the water and accessible showers, change rooms and bathrooms.
